TITLES
There are two English-language editions "The Egg and Sperm Race" (UK and Commonwealth, published by Simon & Schuster) and "Generation" (US, published by Bloomsbury).
The original title was "Generation", which during the writing I changed to "The Generation of Life". Neither publisher liked it:
- Simon & Schuster felt that "The Egg and Sperm Race" would be better. This refers to the game often played at British sports days.
- Bloomsbury preferred the original title, and reverted to "Generation".
We all agreed on using the same sub-title for both editions.
COVERS
The graphic teams in London and New York each came up with their own visions of the cover, taking into account the different titles and the different markets in each country. They sent me their ideas, I commented upon them, and they then made the final decision (see the front page). I think they're both terrific.
The author photo that appears on the jacket was taken by my companion, Tina, in our back garden in Manchester, in the summer of 2005. She says I should have had a shave. She's probably right.
